David Alexander van Tijn was born on March 18, 1962 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He went to high school at the Vossius Gymnasium in Amsterdam, where he graduated in 1980. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1990. He performed research at the Department of Medical Virology of the Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam before his graduation (1985-88) and at the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology of the Emma Children’s Hospital, Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam after his graduation (1990-94), supported fi nancially by the Stichting Klinische Genetica Amsterdam (Clinical Genetics Foundation Amsterdam) and ZonMw (The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development). The research project described in this thesis, performed at the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology under supervision of Prof. Dr Jan de Vijlder and Dr Tom Vulsma, was supported fi nancially by ZonMw (1994-96). The papers that constitute this dissertation were written in 2003-08, based on follow-up of the study patients in 2001 and 2006-08. From 1996-2001 David van Tijn received his training in Pediatrics at the Emma Children’s Hospital (Head: Prof. Dr Hugo Heymans) and at the Department of Pediatrics, Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis, Amsterdam (Head: Drs Evert van der Veer).
In 2001 he obtained his registration as pediatrician and in 2007 as subspecialist in hereditary and congenital disorders (kinderarts-EAA). From 2001-07 he worked as a general pediatrician in the Amstelland Hospital, Amstelveen; in 2007 he joined the pediatric staff of teaching hospital Meander Medical Center in Amersfoort.
Since 2007 he is member of the editorial board of the Dutch pediatric CME journal Praktische Pediatrie. His non-medical activities include writing for the classical music magazine Luister (1990-93) and, together with fi lmmaker Paul Cohen, the making of a documentary fi lm, De Winnaars (1996). David van Tijn lives together with Antoinette van As; they have two sons, Mischa and Noah.
